Continue to reduce waiting times

Fianna Fáil secured the reactivation of the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) in 2016 to ensure that patients who were on the waiting lists could get treated in both the public and private sector. Waiting lists are far too long and patients are suffering.

Since mid-2017 we have seen a reduction of over 8,000 for the in-patient and day-case waiting lists. We propose to build on this and further increase funding over five years to secure ever more sustained reductions in waiting times.

Fianna Fáil’s plan to reduce waiting times

  1. National Treatment Purchase Fund

Increase funding for the National Treatment Purchase Fund to over €100 million. Our aim is to reduce the average waiting times to less than 6 months for all surgical procedures.

  2. Legislate for it

Introduce legislation to ensure that patients are not left lingering on waiting lists. This law would contain targets which we believe will incentivise activity and ensure that waiting lists and waiting times come down.

  3. Open every avenue of care

Ensure that offers of care outside of the public system must be available to meet these targets.

  4. Prioritise and protect public patients

Provide that, for any new elective, hospitals built under the National Development plan should be for public patients only.

  5. More open consultation hours

Ensure that all hospitals have 8am to 8pm consultation times and enforce them.

  6. Double down on transparency

Publish monthly waiting times for diagnostic scans as with other waiting lists.

  7. Open up core departments

Diagnostic scans and X-ray departments must also be made available in public hospitals seven days a week.
